Wish You Could Give S’more?

Well, now you CAN! DOUBLE, in fact … without doubling your out-of-pocket cost!

When’s the last time you went camping?

I’ll have to be honest, I seemed to enjoyed camping a lot more before I joined the Army and Uncle Sam made me camp … a lot. All those long, cold winter nights in the woods turned me into more of a “glamper,” meaning I prefer a comfy mattress, a full-featured bathroom, and climate control.

But—confessions aside—I’ll readily admit that there is something to be said for actual camping. It is a unique experience and one that every kid should have safe, regular access to.

And that’s the problem.

Believe it or not, many of the kids who attend our Clubs have never been camping. They’ve never slept in sleeping bags, pitched a tent, or made the trek to a bath house from a “primitive” cabin. They’ve never cooked over an open fire. They’ve never laid awake at night gazing into a clear night sky, miles from light pollution, just to catch a glimpse of the billions of stars that aren’t visible from their neighborhoods.

That’s why we have Camp Fletcher, located in the Ocooe River area. It gives our kids a chance to experience the wonders of camping.

But Camp Fletcher needs a lot of work … about $20,000 worth. Some of that is covered by grants, but we are still a long ways from having it covered.

Actually, scrap that. That was last week. Today that $20,000 number is higher. Recently thieves broke into Camp Fletcher and stole 20 sleeping bags, 8 tents, 4 gas lanterns, and cooking equipment, all valued at nearly $3,300.

So now, in addition to a new roof, HVAC system, gutters, cabin bunk mattresses, and more, Camp Fletcher has to replace all that camping equipment.

We even had to make the heartbreaking decision to cancel our December 1 campout that was scheduled.

That’s just wrong.

But, as Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

Our hope is that you can help us right this wrong, put Camp Fletcher back in the win column, and allow us to continue giving our kids the kind of phenomenal experiences that they rarely get without us. Your donation will literally change the narrative of this story!

And rest assured, every dollar raised during GivingTWOsday will be matched by our Board (up to $10,000) for the express purpose of getting Camp Fletcher, our Moss Annex for teens, and the new Bike Track “back on track” and ready for a 2019 full of smiling kids. Thank you in advance for your kindness, caring, and generosity during this wonderful holiday season.
